ABOUT ME
“Designing for the theatre is not about illustrating the story. At its best, a set design is a possible model of reality, not a reflection of it.“
I studied theatre design and painting at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of fine Arts) in Maastricht, the Netherlands. After five years, now a Bachelor of Arts, I worked as an assistant for set and costume design at the Theater Basel in Switzerland for 3 years. Here I met theatre director Markus Dietz from Germany and we did our first production together: “Der Vater” by August Strindberg in 1995 at the Theater Basel. The collaboration with Markus turned out to be both very exiting and successful. More than half of the about 60 plays and operas I have designed for since were directed by Markus Dietz. I have also had the pleasure of working with Tom Ryser, Holk Freytag, Wolfgang Engel, Thomas Bockelmann, Johannes Lepper and several other directors. I have designed sets and costumes for various German theatres, such as the Schauspielhaus Bochum, Oper Bonn, Staatsschauspiel Dresden, Schauspiel Leipzig, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Nationaltheater Weimar, Staatstheater Mainz, Staatstheater Kassel and the National Theater Mannheim.
